TSO Therapy - Autism Is For The Worms

helminth imageIt has been evidenced that some of the common symptoms of Autism may result from an abnormal immune response. It has also been evidenced that removing helminths from the body could influence the occurrence of autoimmune disorders. Could it be that having a few worms living in your stomach could be life altering…in a good way?

What’s a Helminth? And how it it used in Autism Treatment?

Simply stated, a helminth is a parasite. More exactly, an internal parasite. You may be more familiar with external parasites such as fleas and lice. Unlike these more common itchy friends, helminths or “Parasitic Worms” live inside of their host. That host is typically the animal or human digestive tract. Though they can live almost anywhere in the body, they prefer the intestinal wall.  An abundance of parasites are often found in people with HIV.

Helminthic therapy, also called TSO (Trichuris Suis Ova) Therapy is a type of immunotherapy. It’s used to treat autoimmune diseases and immune disorders by deliberately infesting the body with a helminth. Why the heck would we do that?

Think about the flu shot. We purposely inject the body with a form of the flu, so that the body fights it off and (hopefully) we avoid getting the horrible flu for one more season. Though not exactly the same instance with TSO Therapy, it’s a similar idea.

It’s been evidenced that there are some parasites that the body needs. This day in age, there’s a vaccine for almost everything. While we’ve decreased the number of instances of immediate death sentences with a severe disease or disorder diagnosis by eliminating parasites like helminths, it seems that it’s a double edged sword. Colitis and Crohn’s Disease numbers are on the rise. So is the number of Autism cases. Maybe, just maybe the body needs helminths. Maybe not in abundance, but at least enough to have a properly functioning immune system.

So, we’re treating Autism with that same parasites that are found in bodies with HIV?

Incorrect.

It’s more of another type of parasite, protozoans that are most common in HIV cases.  It’s strictly hookworms or helminths that are used for this kind of immunotherapy. Also, it’s not so much treating Autism as it is a treatment of some of the symptoms of Autism.

For example, it has been shown that some Autism symptoms are the result of malfunctioning immune system. Studies are also suggesting that removing helminths from the body is the start to obtaining a malfunctioning immune system. There have also been cases reported in which Autism symptoms decrease significantly when the child is sick or with a fever.

In TSO therapy, there are two types of approaches that treatment centers use. They either dose the skin with one large dose of infectious necator americanus larvae, or they are given a more spread out treatment of smaller doses over about 10 weeks. The one dose treatment is typically much cheaper, however the 10 week treatment decreases possible side effects that can occur. Although each individual is different as far as which side-effects may be experienced,  the most common were mild cases of nausea, vomiting and topical rash.

As with every single treatment for every single condition your child may have, you’ll want to consult your doctor. As time goes on, we can only hope that we make greater advancements to improve the lives of our loved ones who have Autism.

Neurotherapy - A Painless Treatment for Autism Symptoms

brainwaves2

Whenever we have some sort of illness or condition, one of the first things we think to ourselves is “what medication can I get that can help me?”.   As humans in a very scientifically advanced world, we rely a lot on medication to k,ill infection and to improve our quality of life. The same rings true in parents who have children diagnosed with Autism. One of the first questions of any parent is surely “how do we fix it?”  The second is surely “Will it hurt my child?” and somewhere down the line in the “doesn’t matter as much as my child’s health” category is “How much will it cost?”

Unfortunately for Autism, there is no cure. Not yet. There are dozens of medications that can treat symptoms individually, but with every medication comes side effects. Even over-the-counter pain medication has some risk of side effects. What if, though, there was another possible treatment? An non-invasive, non-medicinal, safe treatment that has proven effective in some cases. There is such a treatment: Neurotherapy.

Neurotherapy - Physical Therapy For The Brain

Neurotherapy has also been commonly referred to as Neurofeedback or EEG biofeedback. More simply put, it’s a real-time illustration of brain wave activity that can be monitored by specialists to determine where dysfunctional brain patterns are occurring, especially in Autism.

Neurotherapy can also be thought of as Physical Therapy for the brain. When you hurt a bone or muscle, you have to train it how to work appropriately again. When brain activity is abnormal, Neuroptherapy aims at making the activity functional again. For example, during an EEG/Neurotherapy session, if the brain displays activity that is desired by the “trainer”, then a positive reward can be given. If it is in the opposite direction of the desired activity, then the trainer can give opposite feedback, or sometimes the absence of the positive feedback is enough. When an undesired habit or symptom is existent, if the brainwave that is associated with it can be located, isolated, and normalized, then ideally the symptom disappears.

As we said, one of the most worried about issue with any kind of Autism treatment is whether or not the treatment will hurt your child. It’s universally agreed that there isn’t anything much worse than seeing your child that you love in some kind of pain or discomfort. Rest assured that Neurotherapy treatment isn’t painful at all. In fact, many children actually enjoy it very much.

The process is simple: Electrodes are placed on various areas of the head and scalp to live-monitor brain waves. A screen is in front of the patient and on that screen is where the positive, colorful brain feedback is given. Many children compare the treatments to video games and many parents have reported successful symptom alleviation after only a few treatments.  It seems like more of a game, or a fun-time activity than it is Neurotherapy and brain training.

This treatment is typically used in high-functioning Autistic children to improve attention spans as well as learning disabilities that often occur.

Hyberbaric Oxygen Therapy - What You Need and Should Know

hbot image

If someone would have recommended you to try HBOT 10 years ago, chances are that you would have thought it was some new-age robot that helped you with something like housework. How helpful it would be to have a machine that would do the impossible. Today, though it’s not as universally known, more and more people realize that HBOT isn’t a robot - it’s a highly successful treatment of many brain traumas.

The Basics - What is HBOT?

HBOT is an acronym for Hyberbaric Oxygen Therapy. “Hyper” means ‘increased’, and “Baric” relates to pressure. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the intermittent treatment of the body with 100 precent oxygen at pressures greater than the atmosphere.

When 100% oxygen is delivered to the body at an increased pressure, much of the oxygen is absorbed by the blood stream and carried to necessary organs and tissues. This delivery of pure oxygen helps antibiotics and other medications work better, and activates white blood cells in order to ward off infection.

How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy help Autism?

Oxygen Free Radicals are a developing brain’s worst enemy as they attack and destroy developing brain cells.  There are naturally ocurring antioxidants in the body whose job in the body is to attach these Oxygen Free Radicals and balance them out. Studies have found that the levels of this antioxidant are very low in a large amount of autistic children.

Delivering 100-precent oxygen to the Autistic body as is done in HBOT,  stimulates an increase of SOD (superoxide dismutase), one of the body’s most important antioxidant. SOD seeks out Free Radicals in the body and works to balance them out.

What Can I Expect With HBOT?

There are many pictures of Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers available on the internet. They can be a bit overwhelming and downright scary for a parent considering the treatment for their child.  The process itself is simple, and the patient is made to be as comfortable as possible. Many children enjoy the time in the space-ship like chamber.

An HBOT treatment is usually an hour long. The patient is placed on a cot-like bed and rolled into the chamber. For the hour, 100% Oxygen is released into the chamber, and the patient breathes it in. The pressure is increased slowly throughout the treatment and at the end, the patient is slowly decompressed and then exits the chamber.

During the treatment, the patient is free to watch TV, listen to music, talk with friends/family in the room, nap, read, or generally anything. The chamber has 360 degree vision as to avoid any claustrophobia or crypt-like feelings.

Does HBOT Really Work?

As with every treatment for every disease and disorder, there are those for the treatment and against the treatment. Worldwide, many conditions are being treated using Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment and there are many success stories.  Some of the other conditions that are being treated using HBOT include: sickle cell anemia, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, and Multiple Sclerosis. Though, there are over 100 conditions in which the HBOT chamber is being used to treat.

The question was: “Does HBOT Really Work?” - and we don’t have an answer for each person individually. We’d love nothing more than to declare, “YES! It works for us and it will work for your child!” But, we can’t. The effectiveness of any treatment is going to solely depend on your child’s specific condition and body chemistry. There have been success stories; children who show less destructiveness and aggression; but it’s not for everyone.  Scientifically, however, the treatment just makes sense. A primary cause of brain cell destruction is the abundance of Free Radicals. Delivering 100 percent oxygen to the blood stream enables the production of an antioxidant proven to seek out these Free Radicals. It just makes sense!

So, I want to try HBOT for my child. Now What?

Seizures and PDD - the What, How and Why?

Neurons Firing During Seizure

Neurons Firing During Seizure

Seizures are something we associate with Epilepsy. — a brian disorder in which multiple, unexpected seizures are triggered. Seizures are also a very common symptom of Pervasive Development Disorders (PDD) including Autism.

The Basics - What Is a Seizure?

Seizures themselves are highly studied. Seizures occur when there is abnormal electrical activity in the brain. There are times in which the brain’s neurons all fire simultaneously, and this is what causes a seizure to occur. The majority of people think of a seizure as the violent convulsing,  unconscious episode that people have. This is true - some seizures, known as tonic clonic seizures are characterized by uncontrollable and violent shaking. This is because both sides of the brain are affected. However, a partial seizure - only affecting part of the brain - can be as mild as losing awareness for a brief amount of time. The recurrence of seizures is known as Epilepsy, however, seizures can occur in people who do not have epilepsy as well.

Because seizures have so many symptoms, and can sometimes affect different parts of the body, they are classified into motor, sensory, autonomic, emotional, or cognitive.

Why Seizures Occur in PDD and Autism Cases

It has been found that one in four children with a PDD will develop seizures. Most recent studies conclude that 1/3 of Autistic children will also develop epilepsy. Though it was heavily documented in the 1960’s when the connection between Autism and Seizures was studied, researches even today are working hard to establish links between seizures and Autism.

Another interesting study is that the chances of developing seizures range based upon which subcategory of PDD that the person has. The present studies suggest that people with classical Autism have a 30% risk of having seizures, while those with Asperger Syndrome have less than a 10% risk. Those with Disintegrative Disorder or Rett Syndrome have over 75% chance of developing seizures. What this shows us is that there are risk factors - specifically in Autism - that determine the risk of a person who has PDD developing seizures.

The major risk factors for a child with Autism developing seizures is the level of cognitive impairment and motor deficits. The more common symptoms of Autism - clumsiness, fine motor coordination, aren’t as severe as paralysis on one side or forms of cerebral palsy. The more severe the cognitive impairment, in some cases, the greater the risk for developing seizures. In a child with Autism, who has normal intelligence and no other apparent mental condition or family history of seizures, the chance of them developing seizures is less than 10%. However, if the Autistic child has mental retardation or severe motor deficit, the risk rises to 50%

Treating Seizures

Sometimes, seizures give a signal of their onset. Some sufferers report a strange taste in their mouths, sudden body temperature change, etc. Sometimes, they are unexpected. Typically, seizures can be controlled with medication. It’s very important that the type of seizure, whether or not its epilepsy, and the underlying cause of the seizures is studied as to provide the appropriate medication.

Using EASe to Treat Sensory Perception Disorder in Autism

Autism Headphones Image

In cases of Autism and other neurological disorders, one of the common symptoms is difficulty with sensory perception. Electronic Auditory Stimulation Effect (more commonly known as EASe), is a therapeutic audio strategy that targets auditory sensory difficulties and strives to better enable children to deal with this painful and life-altering symptom of Autism.

What Is Sensory Perception Disorder?

We often think of sensory perception disorder as something that can make its sufferers unable to see, hear, taste, etc. to the same capacity as those with normal sensory perception. This is true in some cases as we all have seen blind and deaf people in person and portrayed often on televishttp://www.newautismcure.com/wp-admin/post-new.phpion.

However, there are other cases in which sensory perception is abnormally heightened. An alarm clock ring can be excruciating to hear, the smell of egg salad can be pungent, the feel of a warm washcloth on the skin can be intolerable. The shining of the summer sun through the curtains can be blinding and painful.

Specifically in Autism, auditory hypersensitivity is very common and can be extremely painful. Another similar condition, Hyperacusis is common in Autism. In Hyeracusis cases, the sufferer is over-sensitive to certain frequency ranges of sound and is often unable to tolerate everyday sounds such as birds chirping, planes flying overhead, or even people chewing.

How Do People Develop Sensory Perception Disorder?

As the brain grows, it develops connections that enable us to react in a “typical” way to sensory stimuli. We pickup the natural reaction to cover our ears when a loud sound occurs, pinch our nose when we smell something foul, or cover our eyes when the light is too bright. If these connections aren’t made, it is believed that the child will not be able to develop the ability to execute habitual practices for sensory occurrences. If the child has been dealing with Sensory Perception long enough, it’s possible that they develop unnatural responses as coping mechanisms.

As parents to an Autistic child, what are you to do? This is where EASe comes into play.

The Basics and History Of EASe

EASe is a compilation of music that has been processed through Berard AIT (Auditory Integration Training) standards. Dr. Guy Berard created this system in the 1950’s to treat certain kinds of hearing impairments. After further studies, he found that other brain functions such as listening, concentration, and memory were also improved by using his program.Additionally, many clients reported no longer experiencing the anxiety often associated with unexpected and irritating noises.

A typical EASe therapy consists of strategically processed music on several CDs. It is recommended that they are played in random order.  It ideally teaches children how to habituate sudden noises and develop better processing of unexpected frequencies. This leads to better mental, physical and emotional adjustments. The amount of time that you’ll see the benefits can range as each child is different. Some people report changes after as few as 2 sessions, others take a few weeks or months.

Where Can I Obtain EASe CD’s?

There are several websites that offer this treatment. You can either type EASe into your search engine, or contact our admin team here at New Autism Cure for leads on products.

Keep in mind that the EASe approach is not a cure to Autism so much as a means to control some of the most life altering and uncomfortable symptoms.

Vitamin B3 Showing Promise of Being a Helpful, Natural Autism Treatment

Niacin B3 Image

As the number of people affected by Autism grows, so do the groundbreaking advancements. Autism isn’t a sentence for you or your loved one to lead an unfulfilled life. Researchers are constantly looking at different medications - specifically natural medicinal options - that may be able to alleviate some of the often uncomfortable symptoms of the puzzling disorder. Many Vitamins have proven benefits in Autism and other neurological disorders. More recently, Vitamin B3 has been a focal point for many studies concerning it’s affect on Autism.

As time passes, it is being found that Autism is not just a neurological disorder, but one that affects the entire body in various ways. Clearly, the brain is one of the most affected parts of the body, however, other symptoms of Autism are more focused on other areas. For example, an overly acidic stomach is one of the largely reported side-effects of Autism due to the imbalance of chemicals in the Autistic body.

Traditionally, vitamin B3 is taken to regulate circulation as well as keep skin looking it’s best.  It has also been found that Vitamin B3 aids in the proper functioning of the nervous system, as well as brain function. Digestion and stomach acid issues are often reported in Autism cases. Vitamin B3 assists in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and aids in the production of hydrolic acid for the digestive system.

Vitamin B3 has also been prescribed to treat these other common conditions when given in the proper dosage:

High Cholesterol
Anxiety
Alcohol Withdrawal
Type 2 Diabetes
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperglycemia

In some recent studies, done by the Henry Ford Hospital,  it was found that when given Vitamin B3 (also called niacin), rats who had a stroke showed new brain cell creation and this greatly improved neurological function. Essentially, it is believed that niacin in some sense re-wires the brain. With this advancement, Vitamin B3 could be a monumental help in those with stroke, Autism, or other devastating neurological disorders.

With all of the different techniques, medicines, and therapy choices, it’s often hard  to make decisions on what treatment approach to take. While there is  no official statement saying “B3 Treats Autism 100% Of the Time”, it’s important to note the logistics of it all. Undoubtedly, Vitamin B3 has a connection to the brain. There is a disorder, Pellagra, which is caused by a deficiency of Vitamin B3 in the body. It is characterized by skin rash, loss of appetite and neurological effects. Though rare, it does exist and target the Western part of the world.

Where can one get Vitamin B3? There’s always taking a multivitamin or getting a supplement. Vitamin B3 is also found in Roasted Chicken Breast, yellowfin tuna, lean beef tenderloin, venison and roasted turkey breast.

Bottom line - it’s important that someone with Autism take supplements. The Autistic body is often deficient in several areas, and in order to maintain the best health possible, it’s important that you supplement these deficiencies. Take special note of which supplements are available for which symptoms, and be on the look out and ear out for new advancements. With more studies, Vitamin B3 could be a very big step in the direction of solving the mystery of Autism.

Studies Show The Benefits of Kangen Water In Alleviating Autism Symptoms

Monday, March 29th, 2010

A few posts back, we took a look at the studies that were showing the benefits of using Ionized Water Filtration systems as a treatment for Autism.  In addition to this method, there are also studies being done surrounding Kangen Water and it’s ability to treat Autism. The majority of these studies are being conducted in Japan, and some are still in experimental stages, however, just looking at some general connections between symptoms of Autism, and the proven benefits of Kangen water show that it seems to only make sense that the use of Kangen water would be a beneficial treatment option.

Kangen Water itself is an alkaline water that has many anti-oxidant properties. In order to produce Kangen Water, regular water ( H20) goes through the electrolysis process and separates into two different substances. One part is an acidic HO molecule, and the other as an alkaline OH- molecule. The Kangen Water creators bottle the OH molecule of the alkaline base for drinking purposes, and the acidic HO molecule is often used for sterilization, skin and plants. The word Kangen is Japanese for “return to the source” or “return to the origin” which explains the creation, philosophy and marketing of the product.

Kangen Water has a very small molecular structure. What does this mean? Traditional tap and bottled water have larger molecules, so they pass through the body quickly without reaching their destination cells. When water doesn’t reach cells, they suffer from cellular dehydration and either die, or do not function to their full efficiency. It is believed that Kangen Water has the ability to rehydrate these cells before they dry out and die.

What Does This Mean For Autism?

The benefits of Kangen Water are proving to be significant and have lead the Japanese researchers to take a closer look at the ways that it may be able to treat Autism symptoms.  A few of the symptoms and conditions of Autism that are being studied are the acidic body, dehydration and inflammation. These three symptoms alone have been found to be decreased in those who consume Kangen Water over traditional non-electrolyzed water.

Our bodies are supposed to have a balance of acidity and alkaline. The balance of these ensure proper metabolism, immune system, and even brain function.  Specifically, a body that is too acidic (a common symptom of Autism ) is a breeding place for diseases. When too acidic, our bodies try to buffer or balance this out by taking calcium from our bones and magnesium needed for heart health. It then turns extra acid into solids and stores them in fatty tissues, which can clog arteries. Because Kangen Water is alkaline, it works to dissolve excess acid and restore balance.

Additionally, mal-digestion is a common occurrence in Autism Disorder. Along with hyperactive intestines and abnormal bowel function, Autism often spells discomfort and abdominal unhealthiness. Drinking Kangen Water with its proven benefits, can help with restoration of both hydration and a healthy digestive tract.

Autism has dozens and dozens of symptoms. It’s important that we take a look at each symptom individually, and then think about what types of treatments are available for each one. For example, it might never be proven that Kangen Water can change say, the sometimes Obsessive Compulsive type behavior that comes with Autism. However, it might be able to treat other physical symptoms. Of course, we hope that one day, there will be a universal  treatment for all symptoms and to hopefully be able to successfully treat the disorder.

An Autism Treatment as Easy as H2O?

Monday, March 15th, 2010

waterionizer imageAs humans, we are always putting things into our bodies to get some kind of reaction. Whether its caffeine for stimulation, liquids for hydration, or fiber for regularity, we’re constantly aiming to have our bodies in the best, most healthy state. Even when we’re not at our best, we put medications inside of us to alleviate symptoms and kill viruses. In order to heal, the body needs to return to a balanced state, replenishing things its missing, and taking away the overkill of some other things.

Could treatment for Autism come from something as simple as good old H2O?

The Ionization of Water

It’s no big secret that water in its tap form isn’t the most healthy. Everyday, many of us put our water through a filtration process. It’s become much easier these days with the easily available and affordable water filtration systems. We take out the things that we don’t need. Who wants damaging parasites in their water?

Additionally, we can go a step further and concentrate the benefits of water, while also targeting consistent problem areas with Autism is by putting water through an ionizing process. The Ionization Process concentrates minerals that are already existent in water such as magnesium, potassium and calcium. The produced product is water that can be more easily absorbed by the body and improves the function of antioxidants in the body. Consuming ionized water enables the body’s own antioxidants to neutralize other free radicals than would normally be possible by consuming traditional filtered water.

The Ideal Treatment

In Autism cases, brain inflammation is a prominent feature as certain immune components that promote inflammation are often triggered in autism cases. Also, the autistic person often has oxidation stress. Typically, antioxidant supplements are used to treat this symptom. In order to neutralize the neuro-inflammation, an ideal treatment, no matter if it’s an antioxidant or other form, should have a slight alkaline pH level, an increased anti-oxidation capability, and a very small molecular structure to make for an easier passage through cells.

Where’s the connection?

Well, as we said, the ideal antioxidant would target the problem areas that are often found in Autism. The ideal treatment carries all of the features of ionized water. It concentrates the minerals, carries a slight alkaline pH to balance neuro-inflammation, anti-oxidation capability, and a miniscule molecular structure for cell passage.

Coincidence?

A Closer Look at OSR#1 And Autism

Monday, March 8th, 2010

osr1 image

This day in age, it’s no big surprise to see something that was created for one purpose to be used in another. For example, I had a toothache a few weeks ago, and a website recommended using Pure Peppermint Extract. I gave it a whirl, and I had a decent amount of relief from the pain until I was able to make it to the dentist.

There are countless examples of this in medicine, and one of the more controversial examples is the use of OSR#1 specifically for the treatment of Autism. OSR#1 was originally developed to remove heavy metals from soil and acid mine drainage. After further research and testing, OSR#1 was found to be an effective antioxidant. Although the website openly says that the drug is not approved by the FDA nor has it been proven to cure any illness or disease, it provides links in order for parents and caregivers to obtain lists of pharmacies who distribute OSR#1.

How does OSR#1 Treat Autism?

Autism is often suggested to be directly linked to toxic levels of metals, especially mercury.  This being said, OSR#1 works to scavenge free radicals in the body and helps to maintain safe glutathione levels. More simply - it removes toxic metals. A study was done of children ages 3-8 years old where their severity of autism was compared with their level of excreted toxic metals. There were several positive correlations between the two. If Autism is in fact caused or affected by the level of toxic metals, then it seems only logical that a compound used to remove toxic metals would be an effective treatment.

Critics’ Questions and Clinicians’ Answers

Critics argue the basis of the compound to be considered “safe”. An FDA toxicologist questioned the safety of OSR#1 and inquired what studies had been done to prove that this was indeed safe for human ingestion. Dr. Boyd Haley, the developer of OSR#1 responded with a 10 person study. He said: “We looked at everything, including OSR#1’s effect on essential minerals. This project was done on the relatives (children, parents, spouses) of two medical doctors who also treat autistic children, as well as older individuals, and whose children also had ASD problems. No blood or urine test indicated any adverse effect. However, the glutathione results improved dramatically. We obtained an IRB (Institutional Review Board) to evaluate these results and this also showed no adverse effects of OSR#1.”

The Chicago Tribune published an article claiming that OSR#1 went through insufficient testing and was unsafe.  Within a few hours, the OSR1 Twitter page had an announcement saying that the article was false, and appropriate testing was conducted. It directs you to their website, where the history of testing is disclosed. The site even goes as far as saying that the compound is proven to be non-toxic in levels thousands of times higher than the amount suggested for human intake.

What Does This Talk of OSR#1 Mean For Your Autistic Child?

As with all treatments, it’s going to depend on your child’s needs. Though OSR#1 isn’t yet approved by the FDA, it’s important to pay attention to the studies that have been done, and the logistics of it all. The anti-oxidant is available and many doctors swear by it and support its benefits.  As parents, you surely won’t give your child just anything especially when it isn’t safe, so be sure that no matter what route you take for any treatment, medicinal or behavioral, that you take a look in depth and studies and findings.

The Link Between Alzheimers And Autism

Child and Adult Holding Hands Image

Day in and day out, researchers are looking for treatments for the often life-changing condition that affects over 1% of children between 3 and 17. Though a cure for Autism may or may not be around the corner, there are often new advancements, and specialists are trying to find the missing link that will answer the difficult questions. One route that many researchers take, is associating Autism with other similar conditions in which there are successful treatments for. Another way, is to take a look at similarly structured conditions that might not have a cure yet, but have had their own advancements. The possibility of joint-discoveries gives researchers another avenue to explore when searching for cures and treatments for Autism.

One of the conditions that appears to have many of the same characteristics as Autism is one that affects over 26 millions people worldwide. Alzheimer’s traditionally affects the elderly population, but with many of the same symptoms as The one substantial difference is simply the age range of the people that the conditions effect. Autism traditionally affects adolescents while Alzheimer’s tends to attack the elderly population. Setting aside this key difference, Autism and Alzheimer’s have a striking amount of similarities as well.

Autism shares a number of symptoms with Alzheimer’s including those on both physical and psychological level.  Both conditions often leave their sufferers with the tendency to become catatonic at times, have attention transition issues, become easily distracted and/or disoriented and have difficulty with language comprehension. The similarities between the two conditions are in the hundreds - particularly in the similar brain patterns and symptoms.

These likenesses leave you thinking - could Alzheimer’s hold a piece of the puzzle that is finding a cure for Autism? There is currently research being done on a common drug, Namenda which slows the rate of decline in Alzheimer’s patients. Clinicians are studying the possibility that the drug will assist in the treatment of Autism by targeting the same areas in which Alzheimer’s Patients are affected.
