Are Biomedical Treatments Effective? (via)

Are Biomedical Treatments Effective? (via)

Over the years, it has been debated whether or not factors other than neurological ones have anything to do with Autism and other  Neurological Disorders. Studies have found that many ND’s begin in the stomach and can be results of a poor or lacking diet.

Gluten has been one of the things connected to Autism, and many parents adopt a no bread - no dairty - all gluten free diet for their children. Also, it is believed that the bodies of children are often overwhelmed with heavy metals, toxins, viruses (from vaccines), and bacteria.  These factors often cause a slower or even stopped biochemical pathways to the body.

Biomedical Treatments is based upon the belief that the neurological symptoms experienced are the direct result of the physical ailments that children are having, and if the physical is treated, a great deal of symptoms can be alleviated. The main steps in a Biomedical Treatment are:

1. Decrease the level of toxins

2.Help the stomach to heal

3. Increase nutrients

4. Get rid of metals and other toxins.

It is believed that once these things are achieved, the neurological impairments will greatly improve. The most important and in depth step is the first step — Decrease the level of toxins. There are numerous things that are toxic to the body, and as many, if not all must be removed in order to achieve the greatest results. The things that can and should be removed are both dietary and environmental.

  • From a diet aspect:  gluten, dairy, allergens, and bad sugars should all be removed from the diet.
  • Household cleaners should be removed and replaced with natural forms.
  • If your child needs dental work, be sure not to have silver fillings put in their mouths, as they contain mercury.
  • Add a Hepa Air Filter to your child’s room.
  • Ensure that any vaccinations that need to be given are Thimerosal free.
  • Use a fluoride-free toothpaste

From here, it’s necessary to allow and assist the damages already infringed on the body to heal. This is often helpful if a combination of  vitamins are used. Cod Liver Oil, for example has a necessary level of Vitamin A and also aids in the repairing of intestinal walls. It’s also essential to use digestive enzymes and Colostrum (a stomach healing natural supplement) to better help in the body’s repair.

Also important is to keep the level of nutrients up by giving a sufficient level of Vitamins (A, D, B, Zinc, etc.) in order for the body to not only heal, but become stronger. To restore your child to good health, getting the toxins out via detoxification is helpful. There are natural detoxifires as well as medicinal (Chelation).

Bottom line, Biomedical Treatment is still being tested among Autism and Neurological Disorder patients. There  are many success stories. There are also doctors who believe that this method does not work, as they had no success with it. It’s important to keep in mind that the diets of children are traditionally very poor due to the Americanized diet. With that in mind, the removal of the poor diet and repairing of the body may take a little longer than expected due to the damages in the body.

Study shows little connection between autism and MMR vaccine

Monday, December 21st, 2009

The autism rates of been on the rise for years and though there are many theories, there are no definite explanations to the increase of cases.

On December 1st, 2009, in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, a report was released comparing cases of Autism with the MMR (Measles-Mumps Rubella) Vaccine. Some earlier cases suggested an association between the two, while other studies showed otherwise.

In this newest, small scale study, there were 96 autism cases of children from ages 12 to 15, and 192 healthy children matched to cases by birth year and sex. Other factors in the study included mother’s age, medication during pregnancy, generation time, and perinatal injury in the analysis and it was found MMR vaccine was not linked to increased risk of autism.

Of children vaccinated before diagnosis, those who were vaccinated with MMR were at 83 percent reduced risk of autism and those vaccinated with single measles vaccine were at 56 percent reduced risk compared to those who were non-vaccinated.

Vaccinated children were at 72 percent reduced risk of autism compared to those who were did not receive measles vaccine.

The researchers concluded that “the study provides evidence against the association of autism with either MMR or a single measles vaccine.”

H1N1 Vaccine Possibly Linked to Autism

Monday, November 16th, 2009

H1N1 and AutismThe Center for Disease Control said on Friday that H1N1 is widespread through 48 states. People are heading to their doctor’s to obtain the vaccine to protect them from this dangerous and life threatening flu strain. While the vaccine is something that many people do not think twice about obtaining if they have the opportunity, the constant research into the vaccine is turning up risks and side effects that are causing some people are a bit more hesitant in getting the vaccine.

The FDA’s website lists mercury, squalene and formaldehyde among some of the ingredients in the swine flu H1N1 shot. Researchers have found Mercury to cause uncontrollable seizures in primates. Scientific studies have also proven mercury poisoning causes neurological damage.

Another ingredient in the H1N1 vaccine is Thimerosal. Thimerosal has powerful and damaging effects on cells of the nervous and immune systems in mammals including humans. Its effect may vary depending on the dose, the genetics of the individual, and the timing of exposure. The mercury dose from thimerosal produces acute and often deadly ethylmercury blood levels.

In addition to the ingredients which cause various reactions depending on our own chemical markup, researchers claim that the H1N1 vaccine can cause viral overload. The vaccine itself is a “dead virus.”” This means that it is inactive and waiting to be incorporated into the human genome. Once it is placed into the human body, it prompts the body to create antibodies to protect any future invasions of the same (but live) virus.

Perhaps the most dangerous part of this process is that the viral load is increased while your immune system is decreased. This can be a perfect scenario for an extreme case of auto-immune disease. There have even been some researchers that report high viral load in Autism cases.

The Center for Disease Control announced in August that 477 people in the US died from H1N1 flu including 36 children. Nearly 70% of these children had chronic high-risk medical conditions such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy or developmental delay. This emphasizes the importance of caretakers of children with chronic medical conditions consulting with their physicians about obtaining vaccinations against H1N1* (http://www.epilepsy.com/)

As the flu season continues on, the risks and benefits are still being weighed. Some people are rushing to get their vaccines; others are refusing to take the risk while the remainder of the populations wonders what the right answer is – if there even is one.

Know The Risks - Save Your Life

Vaccine DangersMelissa hardly ever got sick. Even when she did, she’d take some over-the-counter medication, head into work and tough through it. When you’re a mom, you learn to deal with minor aches, pains and colds because there’s no such thing as  a”sick day”. Minor bumps and bruises are something you also expect to get when you’re taking care of children.  When Melissa accidentally slammed her hand in a door,  she simply went to the emergency room to be safe. Little did she know one precautionary visit to the emergency room would change her life forever.

When she arrived, the doctor asked her if she had gotten a Tetanus shot. It had been years since she had gotten one, so the doctor ordered one right away. In addition, she had not had her flu shot either, so this was also administered. Melissa went home assuming she had been guarded against any further complications.

A week later, Melissa developed a sore throat and a cough, which are typical flu shot symptoms. She took some Tylenol, and proceeded to carry on her life as usual. About three weeks after she first noticed the flu-like symptoms, they progressed to nausea which sent her back to the emergency room. There, she was given a shot for nausea and sent home. 2 days later, Melissa had gotten progressively worse and went to another hospital’s emergency room where she described her hands, arms, feet and toes were numb. The hospital admitted her into the hospital to try and diagnose what was wrong.

Later in her room, she got even worse. She was dizzy, had blurred vision, couldn’t swallow and was losing her ability to speak. The hospital ordered an MRI and a CT scan. The CT scan showed lesions on her brain in the area that controls basic motor skills - seeing, speech and walking. The MRI was just as bad - the protective covering had been stripped from her spinal cord. Based on their findings, doctors gave Melissa’s family little to no hope of her survival.  They were certain that she was not going to make it through this as the odds were stacked against her.

The day after she arrived at the hospital for the third time since her Flu and Tetanus shots, Melissa was transferred to the ICU unit of Barrow Neurological Institute.  For 1 1/2 weeks, Melissa remained in the ICU while her family stood by waiting for her to meet her expected death.  The doctors diagnosed her with post-viral rhombencephalitis - an infection of the brain affecting motor skills. It was explained that Melissa’s body had began to attack and destroy her brain stem.

For the next 12 days, Melissa was given a 7 day treatment of immunoglobulin to restore her anti-bodies as “the plasma was too dirty to fight off whatever was attacking her body. She spent 2 more weeks in the ICU and was given Steroids.

Thankfully, Melissa has not met the immediate demise that doctors had expected her to. She has been out of the hospital for about 3 weeks now but has a long road of rehabilitation ahead of her due to her during her lengthy stay in the hospital and the various medical procedures she endured that caused her to lose much of her balance and strength.  She is still very swollen from the steroids which she will have to continue taking for the next 2 1/2 months. She also reports problems sleeping and a problem with acne, which she had never experienced before.

Melissa’s story and many others remind us to take extra care when getting any kind of vaccine or medical treatment no matter how routine it is. It is the talk of many medical experts that the H1N1 -Swine Flu Vaccine can cause birth defects including autism when administered to women who are pregnant. It is very important to do your homework  and know the side effects of any and all medications and vaccines that you or your children receive. It is true that medicine is advancing everyday, but if we are not educated in side effects, etc, then it advances at our expense and that of our loved ones.

It is worth mentioning that it is not yet known what exactly caused Melissa’s illness - however they are very certain it was the flu shot that she received - particularly because of the rapid progression of her condition within 1 week of receiving the vaccine, which was not notated on her chart. This is also being investigated.

Bottom line:   Know your facts - do your research - ask questions.

Ian’s Voice

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Parents - Can you remember exactly what you were doing with your child when they were 47 days old? Seems to be a  random question to ask, and one that I wouldn’t be surprised if you were not able to accurately answer. Scott and Deanna Gromowski will certainly not forget that they were saying goodbye to their newborn baby son, Ian on his 47th day of life.

Ian was born 2 weeks premature. Weighing in at an impressive 8 lbs, 1.5 oz and 20 1/2 inches tall, he seemed to be as healthy as any baby should be. Soon after he was born, the doctor’s decided to move Ian to the NICU due to fear of Meconium Aspiration (MAS), which is the inhalation of meconium and amniotic fluid. This can occur before, during or after birth and is very common. In the most extreme of cases, the infant is placed in ICU for 2 weeks while the fluid drains from the lungs.

After being in the NICU for 24 hours, it was confirmed that Ian had MAS along with a fever and rapid breathing. He had to be fed via a stomach tube. Despite his condition, the doctors remained confident that Ian would be released to go home that day. Scott and Deanna were overjoyed and started preparing to go home with their new baby boy.

Despite the doctor’s confidence of Ian’s expected release, Deanna had something eating away at her - Mommy Instinct. She noticed that Ian seemed to be constantly in pain and wincing at it. The nurses were called and Ian was transferred again to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Mom and Dad waited patiently for news on his condition.

On day 4 of his most recent trip to the NICU, Ian was celebrating his one week birthday. Things seemed to be looking up for the little fighter, and the doctor’s again gave the promise of his release the following day. All that was left was to take a hearing test and receive a Hepatitis B vaccination. He received his shot and by the evening, he had had a severe allergic reaction. He broke out in hives, and the Doctor’s and Nurses had no explanation - except for one: “It can’t be the vaccine. Vaccines don’t cause this type of reaction.”

Over the next few days, Ian became increasingly more ill. His platelet count went down, more hives appeared, his posture was described as “seizure like” and he was no longer eating. In addition, he was having trouble breathing. One doctor believed that Ian had some kind of virus and only had a 50/50 chance of survival. In the days to come, Ian progressed to stopping breathing every so often. Eventually his breathing ceased all together and he became filled with fluid. Scott and Deanna had Ian baptized and on the same day they made the risky decision to have him transported to Children’s Hospital. There was a high risk that Ian would not survive the transport.

To every one’s surprise, Ian kept on fighting and made it successfully to Children’s Hospital where a battery of tests were done, blood was taken, and a bone marrow biopsy was done. Scott and Deanna watched close by in horror as their son was examined, and tested. Deanna says on her website:

“I cannot imagine how my son was feeling at that moment. He was such a good boy. While Scott and I were devastated and exhausted, we would have given anything to have traded places with Ian.”

As he became progressively worse, every department of Children’s Hospital saw Ian, from Dermatology to Infectious Diseases. No one had a definite explanation for Ian’s condition or if it would worsen or improve. The only thing everyone seemed to agree on was that it “definitely wasn’t the Hepatitis Vaccine.” He received blood transfusions, and antibiotics. Rashes continued to develop, and it was found that he was allergic to some of the antibiotics that were being administered.

When Ian was just one month old, he went into surgery to have a tube put into his stomach to drain the fluid that had developed inside of him. This would also hopefully help his kidneys which had also begun to shut down. “Through it all,” Deanna recounts, “Ian remained a peaceful strong boy. He made us proud to be his parents.” After some time, his Kidneys began to work on their own. As wonderful as this was to hear, there was still a long road ahead, and Ian’s liver had swollen so badly, that it was visible through his stomach which was very swollen and looked very much like an over inflated balloon. The liver had began to heal itself, but Deanna and Scott knew that all of the medications were proving to be counter productive for Ian. They requested that he be taken off all pain medication and soon after this decision, Ian began to look better. He would open his eyes, and his movement increased dramatically.

No sooner could Deanna and Scott be given a glimmer of hope, Ian took a turn for the worse. During one of his Bone Marrow biopsies, he was accidentally given one of the antibiotics that he was found to be allergic to. They placed Ian on a Bone Marrow Transplant list, but he became increasingly more sick and his breathing which should have been at 100%, hovered just as 60%. His body was giving up on him, but Ian fought to the very last moment.

His last breath was taken at 1AM on August 10th, 2007. He was just 47 days old.

Deanna and Scott did much research into baby Ian’s condition and soon found documentation that proved that though uncommon, there are such things as allergic reactions to vaccinations. In addition they found that there is no treatment available for allergic reactions to such vaccines.

On their website, Ian’s Voice, Deanna and Scott share this bit of information:

Fact: It is suggested that infants get the hepatitis B shot before they leave the hospital. It is not required.

Fact: You can work out your own vaccination schedule and guidelines with your pediatrician.

Fact: You can order vaccines directly from the drug company with fewer additives and in single doses.

Fact: An infant’s immune system is very weak at birth. The hepatitis B vaccine can cause serious reactions if the system is already compromised, as was Ian’s.

Deanna went a step further and had a professional at Children’s Hospital write a case report on Ian’s condition and submitted it to see if there were any other like cases. It was found that several like cases had been reported - let alone those that had not been reported.

One of Ian’s neonatologists at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin did report Ian’s case to VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System).  She also wanted to document Ian’s life in a case study for the Journal of American Academy of Pediatrics. Children’s Hospital would not allow her to do this.

It’s important that as a parent to know your rights and be made aware of the dangers of  vaccinations. Though often helpful in warding off illness, the fact of the matter is that vaccines can also be dangerous. If your child has a reaction to a vaccination, be sure to have a VAERS report done so that more parents can be made aware of the ever growing number of  negative reaction cases.

Had Deanna and Scott been made aware of the risks and sometimes fatal side effects of the Hepatitis vaccine, they might have decided against their son getting the vaccine that would cost him his life. Different people have different opinions on vaccines and their benefits - one thing is for certain - Ian was a strong little boy who fought to the end of his short life. He was determined to live, but you can only survive so long when your body is working against you.

Ian’s detailed story and pictures can be found on the website that Deanna created in his honor. The pictures are very difficult to look at, but tell Ian’s story more accurately that anyone else could.

It’s as best time as any to say that Ian is gone, but will never ever be forgotten.

Swine Flu Vaccine Linked to Autism

Swine Flu Vaccination

Despite its discovery over 100 years ago, the H1N1 virus came alive 5 months ago. Prior to that, talk of the virus, more commonly referred to as “Swine Flu”, was reserved for medical journals and text books until the massive outbreak in April 2009. By the middle of this year, over one-million cases of the Swine Flu had been diagnosed.

When word of a vaccine was heard, there was a nationwide sigh of relief. Millions of doses of the vaccine were produced and sent off to various medical facilities for immediate use. Men and women rushed to get both themselves and their children vaccinated.

When introduced to a medication or vaccine that can treat or prevent illness, it is a rarity that we do much more than quickly glance at the side effects. For example, it is common knowledge that taking over-the-counter pain-killers can cause stomach irritation. However, if a severe toothache needs treatment, it is often the case that one would rather deal with minor stomach pains than the agony of a toothache. What happens though, when a vaccine used to prevent an illness carries the same side effects and potential dangers as the illness itself?

Along with the common flu symptoms of coughing, fatigue, nausea and body aches, Swine Flu can also cause neurological damage. This is especially true in young children and unborn babies. If a pregnant woman develops Swine Flu, the virus is known to attack the genes that control growth, often resulting in the newborn developing Autism. That being said, It seems to be a no-brainer that pregnant women and parents of young children should head directly to their doctor and get the vaccination, right?

Maybe not.

One of the ingredients in the Swine Flu and most all vaccines is Mercury; more specifically Thimerosal which serves as a preservative. It has already been determined that Mercury and many of its forms can cause Autism and other neurological disorders just as the flu itself does.

This poses the difficult question: Do you avoid the vaccination due to its damaging side effects and live on the hope that your child will not get the often deadly flu? Or, do you get the vaccination and inject yourself and/or your child with an element known to cause neurological damage and autism?

The answer to the question simply depends on your personal opinion. Does the risk of the vaccine outweigh the risk of the flu? The benefits and risks are definitely something to bring up with a trusted physician so you can more accurately make the decision based on your individual situation.

With another flu season quickly approaching, the first batches of the Swine Flu vaccine will be hitting doctor’s offices by mid-October. 195 Million doses of the vaccine will be distributed and administered. It is said also that each person will need two doses of the vaccine to be properly protected against the flu.

The Center for Disease Control claims that there will be a Mercury-free vaccine in both injection and nasal spray forms, though it is uncertain when it will be available.

Autism, Vitamin A and Vaccinations

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Toy CarsA few weeks ago, I blogged about Vitamin D and how the rise in Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to the rise in autism, but vitamin D is not the only deficiency that has been linked to autism and some people are suggesting that a deficiency in vitamin A may be responsible.

As I have said before, the Standard American Diet is not healthy and, although we may be eating a lot and filling ourselves up, many of us are actually malnourished because our diet does not contain enough of the essential nutrients that our bodies need to function properly and for our children to develop and grow correctly. Instead our diets are high in sugar, fats, salt and empty calories. However, low fat diets can also be bad for us because by not eating an adequate amount of fat we may actually be causing our bodies to be deficient in vitamin A, which is found in foods like full fat dairy foods, liver and cod liver oil.

Autism and Vaccines

In a study entitled “Is Autism a G-Alpha Protein Defect Reversible with Natural Vitamin A?”, Mary Megson, MD, a developmental pediatrician, argues that “Autism may be a disorder linked to the disruption of the G-alpha protein, affecting retinoid receptors in the brain” and that some cases of autism may be caused by “inserting a G-alpha protein defect, the pertussis toxin found in the D.P.T. vaccine, into genetically at-risk children”. This study also argues that the live viral measles vaccine (MMR) depletes a child’s existing supply of vitamin A and so has a negative impact on the retinoid receptors in the brain.

Megson, in an article entitled “Autism and Vaccinations”, reports that this G-Alpha protein defect causes:-

  • Night blindness
  • Problems seeing light-to-dark shading
  • Problems perceiving what they are seeing - Children try to make sense of things by lining up toys, sorting objects by color etc.
  • Avoidance of eye contact - Megson believes that this is because the child is trying to get light to “land off center in the retina”.
  • Hypersensitivity - A gentle touch can feel rough, common sounds can sound harsh.

Is Vitamin A the Answer?

Megson writes of how she has been treating autistic children effectively with cod liver oil, a source of vitamin A retinol, to “bypass blocked G protein pathways and turn on these central retinoid receptors”. She reports that there were marked improvements in the children in just a few days, including improved eye contact and better vision and perception. After two months of this vitamin A treatment, the children were given a single dose of a drug called bethanechol, to stimulate pathways. These children were then able to talk, laugh, focus and concentrate - a huge improvement!

Research like this really does emphasize the need to give our children a nutrient rich diet and to make sure that we make up for any potential deficiencies with supplements. Cod liver oil is great for children because it is a great source of vitamins D and A (deficiencies have been linked to autism), omega 3 essential fatty acids, and it also offers us the following benefits:-

  • Improved blood flow
  • Reduced risk of coronary heart disease
  • Stronger bones and teeth
  • Better vision
  • Healthier skin
  • Healthy joints
  • Healthy brain development

There are many different types of cod liver oil supplements available for children - syrups, capsules, chewy tablets etc., so you’re bound to find one that your child likes and will take without any problem.

Autism and Mitochondrial Disease

Monday, May 18th, 2009

VaccineIt was the Vaccine Court Poling Case that brought the possible link between Mitochondrial Disease out into the open in 2008. The Poling family won compensation, in the form of an out of court settlement, because they were able to convince people that their daughter Hannah’s autism was a result of nine vaccines that had been administered to her just 48 hours before Hannah developed the first signs and symptoms of autism.

Hannah Poling suffered from Mitochondrial Disease, or dysfunction, a disorder that she had inherited from her mother, and it is not known whether it was the vaccines alone that caused her autism or whether her mitochondrial disease had left her vulnerable to the vaccines triggering the autism. The Chief Science Officer of the charity “Autism Speaks” thinks that in cases like Hannah Poling, the vaccinations stimulate the immune system, putting stress on the functioning of the cells in of the body and exacerbating the symptoms of the Mitochondrial Disease that the child already has and triggering autism symptoms.

Mitochondrial Disease

Mitochondrial Disease is not just one disease, but is actually a collection of over 40 different disorders that affect the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the “powerhouse” organelles (subunits) of cells known as the eukaryote cells. The job of the mitochondria is to covert energy from food molecules into Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) which is needed to power cells and for metabolism.

Mitochondrial Disease has many different characteristics, depending on where the defective DNA has been distributed in the body, but symptoms can include:-

  • Muscle weakness
  • Heart problems
  • Episodes similar to strokes
  • Problems with co-ordination and motor skills
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Developmental delays

Evidence Linking Autism and Mitochondrial Disease

As well as the Poling Case, a Portuguese Study has also suggested a link between autism spectrum disorders and Mitochondrial Disease. This study (”Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Population-based Study” 2005) looked at 69 autistic children and found that five of the group had mitochondrial abnormalities. A US Study by Dr John Shoffner backed this up by finding that about 20% of autism sufferers also have markers for mitochondrial disease.

The Vaccine Debate

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

On February 24th, on The Huffington Post site, Robert F. Kennedy Junior and David Kirby reported a ground-breaking court ruling concerning the MMR vaccine and autism.

Although the Washington federal Vaccine Court has recently ruled against three families who were claiming a link between the MMR vaccine, thimerosal and autism, the Court ruled differently in the case of Bailey Banks back in 2007, a case which has only just come to light.

The Bailey Banks Case

Back in June 2007, Special Master Richard Abell ruled that the parents of Bailey Banks, aged 10, had sufficiently demonstrated to the Vaccine Court that “the MMR vaccine at issue actually caused the conditions from which Bailey suffered and continues to suffer.”

vaccination

The Vaccine Court awarded the Bailey family over $810,000 as a lump sum and between $30,000 and $40,000 per year for Bailey’s care, as compensation.

The Court ruled that the MMR vaccine had in fact caused the “acute brain damage” that was responsible for Bailey’s ASD. Special Master Abell ruled that the family had proven that the vaccine caused acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), a brain inflammation illness, and that this led to PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified).

On hearing all of the facts of the case, the Court agreed that Bailey’s ADEM was caused by the MMR vaccine and this his ADEM was serious enough to cause permanent brain damage and developmental delays which are classed as PDD-NOS.

In Robert F. Kennedy’s words:

“The Court found that Bailey would not have suffered this delay but for the administration of the MMR vaccine, and that this chain of causation was… a proximate sequence of cause and effect leading inexorably from vaccination to Pervasive Developmental Delay.”

Kennedy also points out that this is not an isolated ruling and that a CBS News investigation has found that 1,322 families have been awarded compensation by the Vaccine Court for brain damage caused by vaccines, since 1988.

But where does that leave families who are worried about the US vaccine program?
