The Vaccine Debate

On February 24th, on The Huffington Post site, Robert F. Kennedy Junior and David Kirby reported a ground-breaking court ruling concerning the MMR vaccine and autism.

Although the Washington federal Vaccine Court has recently ruled against three families who were claiming a link between the MMR vaccine, thimerosal and autism, the Court ruled differently in the case of Bailey Banks back in 2007, a case which has only just come to light.

The Bailey Banks Case

Back in June 2007, Special Master Richard Abell ruled that the parents of Bailey Banks, aged 10, had sufficiently demonstrated to the Vaccine Court that “the MMR vaccine at issue actually caused the conditions from which Bailey suffered and continues to suffer.”

The Vaccine Court awarded the Bailey family over $810,000 as a lump sum and between $30,000 and $40,000 per year for Bailey’s care, as compensation.

The Court ruled that the MMR vaccine had in fact caused the “acute brain damage” that was responsible for Bailey’s ASD. Special Master Abell ruled that the family had proven that the vaccine caused acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), a brain inflammation illness, and that this led to PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified).

On hearing all of the facts of the case, the Court agreed that Bailey’s ADEM was caused by the MMR vaccine and this his ADEM was serious enough to cause permanent brain damage and developmental delays which are classed as PDD-NOS.

In Robert F. Kennedy’s words:

“The Court found that Bailey would not have suffered this delay but for the administration of the MMR vaccine, and that this chain of causation was… a proximate sequence of cause and effect leading inexorably from vaccination to Pervasive Developmental Delay.”

Kennedy also points out that this is not an isolated ruling and that a CBS News investigation has found that 1,322 families have been awarded compensation by the Vaccine Court for brain damage caused by vaccines, since 1988.

But where does that leave families who are worried about the US vaccine program?

Many families, who feel that their child’s autism was caused by a vaccination, understandably want to protect any subsequent children from the risks associated with vaccinations. Well, there are steps you can take.

The Generation Rescue 3 Point Plan

Jenny McCarthy and her organization, Generation Rescue, are concerned about the US vaccination program which gives 36 vaccines to children before they even reach the age of 6! Jenny points out that Denmark have a far lower rate of autism than the US and only administer 12 vaccines between birth and 6, yet they are a First World country with a great medical system.

You can read the details about Generation Rescue’s 3 Point Plan on their website but here are the main points:-

Take Precautions

  • Leave your child’s vaccinations until they are slightly older (18 months - 2 years)
  • Do not get them vaccinated if they are ill or on antibiotics
  • Only get one vaccination done at a time
  • Get measles, mumps and rubella given as separate injections rather than having the all-in-one MMR
  • Never allow your child to be vaccinated with a vaccine that contains thimerosal
  • Supplement your child’s diet with high doses (3,000 to 5,000mg) of Vitamin C the day before and the day after a vaccine.
  • Consider giving your child high doses of Vitamin A (5,000 IU +) the day before and the day after the MMR vaccine.

Delay Vaccines

Donald Miller, M.D., in his article “A User Friendly Vaccine Schedule”, recommends that children should not start a program of vaccinations until they have reached the age of 2.

Consider an Alternative Vaccine Schedule

Jenny McCarthy points out the huge difference between the US vaccination schedules of the 1980s and the present time and asks why on earth do our children need so many more vaccinations? If you are interested in trying an alternative vaccination program, you can use the guidelines of Dr Donald Miller, use the 1983 vaccination schedule or follow the Danish vaccination schedule.

Whatever your thoughts on vaccinations, you must talk to your healthcare provider and seek the appropriate medical advice. You need to get the balance right and make sure that your child is protected against serious diseases, while also not putting them at risk of brain damage and complications.
