The Wonder of HBOT
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been adapted from use by deep sea divers and the navy, to being used all around the world to treat and heal a multitude of diseases and conditions with remarkable results. HBOT is being hailed as a revolutionary and ground-breaking treatment for conditions and injuries like:-

One of my HBOT chambers
- Strokes and brain injuries
- Burns
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Wounds
- Poisoning
- Circulatory problems
- AIDS
- Autism
HBOT has even been approved by the FDA for 13 different conditions! It is not a fad, it is a recognized treatment with proven results.
The conditions which HBOT treats so successfully all have something in common – they are all conditions which can benefit from an increased amount of oxygen in the blood.
For example, in strokes and brain injuries, the brain has been starved of oxygen; in the case of burns and wounds, tissue has been damaged and has been starved of oxygen; and in carbon monoxide poisoning, carbon monoxide attaches to hemoglobin preventing it from carrying oxygen and thereby starving the body’s tissues of their normal supply of oxygen. I could go on, but I think you can see the common aspects of these conditions.
The body needs oxygen for proper functioning and for healing to take place. It is important that oxygen, which is carried by hemoglobin in the blood, can get to the part of the body that is damaged, in order for this damage to be repaired. We all know that if our oxygen supply is cut off, we can die in just a few minutes. Oxygen is vital for life.
The HBOT Effect
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy treats all of these conditions, and more, by giving a patient 100% pure oxygen while under pressure. The patient sits or lies in a special hyperbaric chamber which is then pressurized with oxygen and the patient breathes in this oxygen.
This pure oxygen, given under pressure, can overcome oxygen starvation by dissolving not only into the hemoglobin, but also into the cerebrospinal fluid (which is found in the brain and spinal cord), the plasma of the blood and the lymph. These fluids are then able to carry this valuable and life-giving oxygen around the body to parts where it is needed. This oxygen allows the body to repair damaged tissue, fight infection, create new tissue, and it enables the organs to function properly.
HBOT and Autism
You may be wondering how on earth HBOT can help Autism. Let me explain:-
Although there are many theories and much controversy about the causes and triggers of autism spectrum disorders, it is plain that autism is not a psychiatric disorder, but that it is a biological disease. Many people, including Dan Rossignol, MD, a renowned DAN! Physician, believe that autism is characterized by:-
- Damaged cells caused by oxidative stress (having too many free radicals)
- Damage to the central nervous system and brain
- Inflammation of the gut and brain
- Reduced oxygen to the brain, caused by reduced blood flow
If these are the main physiological characteristics of autism spectrum disorders, no wonder HBOT can successfully treat autism! As we know, HBOT helps the body to repair and heal, it increases the oxygen supply to vital organs and tissue, it enables the body to build new tissue and it has also been found to reduce inflammation – a brilliant combination.
The Use of HBOT
In their book “The Oxygen Revolution”, Paul G Harch, MD, and Virginia McCullough point out that “HBOT is not an/either or therapy. Rather, it is a foundation therapy which we combine with other enrichment therapies to recover the greatest brain function and maximize human potential”. I agree 100% with this comment. HBOT should be used in conjunction with other biomedical approaches, such as chelation which detoxifies the body of toxins. Used in this way, there is a higher chance of success.

How do you get an autistic child to stay in the HBOT chamber??? My child would have to be drugged up.

It all depends on the child and parents. Most parent (a mom or dad or the usual caregiver) goes in with their child. Or you can preoccupied him with his usual toys and play around with him inside the chamber. Otherwise, I suggest playing a game inside an open or unsealed non-functioning chamber/tube initially then progressing up to a functioning chamber. The idea is to be creative.

Very interesting article… But it leave me a question;
Because that HBOT help people by giving them alot of oxygen, does that mean that aerobic exercise will have the same effect on autism (since it increase flow and make your lungs absorb oxygen better)?
August 27th, 2009 at 12:35 am
Yes and no. Aerobic exercises just increase the efficiency thus, consumption of oxygen by your cellular cells and exchange of air via lungs. The amount generate is not sufficient enough as we would still be breathing about 21% oxygen and in a much lower quantity. Compressed air as in HBOT makes the oxygen soluble for absorption directly into blood stream and pass through blood-brain barrier at 100% each time.

What are the immediate side effects for this treatment
November 20th, 2009 at 10:41 am
Hi Nestor,
Normally, you would not noticed any effects unless you are claustrophobic or you went into the chamber with congested ear(s). If you have a cold for example then your ears won’t be able to equalize with the “dive” and so you would feel pain along the side of the neck on the congested ear. This is an easy fix with decongestant.
